Thomas Canavan is a nonprofit executive, public safety advocate, and community leader based in Olney, Maryland. His career has focused on strengthening public institutions, expanding educational opportunity, and supporting those who serve our communities.

Thomas currently serves as Chief Operating Officer of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund and Executive Director of the National Law Enforcement Museum in Washington, D.C. In these roles, he oversees operations across finance, human resources, facilities, security, visitor services, and museum programs including collections, exhibitions, and education. His work helps support a national nonprofit dedicated to honoring the service and sacrifice of law enforcement officers while promoting greater public understanding of public safety.

Throughout his career, Thomas has worked at the intersection of public service, education, and civic engagement. He has participated in more than one hundred meetings with members of Congress and policymakers as part of national advocacy efforts supporting legislation affecting the law enforcement community. He has also convened national conversations addressing challenges such as law enforcement recruitment and retention and helped strengthen the long-term sustainability of nonprofit institutions through responsible financial stewardship and diversified funding.

Earlier in his career, Thomas served as Director of Programs at the Delaplaine Arts Center in Frederick, Maryland, where he expanded exhibitions, lectures, and educational programs that connected regional audiences with contemporary artists. Before that, he was Arts Manager for the Los Angeles County Fair Association, where he created year-round arts programming in a historic WPA-era arts center and launched the SoCal MFA exhibition, a regional showcase for graduate artists from across Southern California.

Thomas also worked with Washington, D.C. Public Schools, coordinating after-school programming that expanded access to arts, athletics, tutoring, and enrichment opportunities for students across the district. In that role he supervised a team of educators and developed partnerships that helped provide thousands of students with additional learning opportunities.

In addition to his professional work, Thomas is active in his community. He serves as a Reserve Officer with the Maryland Natural Resources Police and is Chair of the Public Policy Committee for the Greater Olney Civic Association. His past civic service includes serving as a commissioner for the South Lake Parking Commission in Pasadena, California, and as a board member of the Pomona Public Library Foundation.

Thomas holds a Master of Science in Arts Administration from Boston University and a Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art from the University of Maryland.

He lives in Olney, where he enjoys trail running, organizing the Olney Fun Run and Walk, and spending time outdoors with his family and neighbors.
